The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has successfully recovered $900,000 in proceeds linked to corruption and is on track to recover an additional $300,000 by mid-year. This progress comes after a settlement associated with the conviction of former contractor Feroz Jan Mohammed, who received an eight-year prison sentence for bribery and fraudulently obtaining $3 million from the Department of National Roads in 2015.

FICAC’s efforts included pursuing a conviction-based forfeiture under the Proceeds of Crime Act while Mohammed’s appeal was ongoing. A settlement in March 2023 resulted in an agreement that specified a total payment of $1.2 million in exchange for forfeiting certain assets identified during FICAC’s investigation. To date, the recovery of $900,000 has been deposited into the Forfeited Assets Fund, marking a significant victory for the commission.

The remaining $300,000 is expected to be paid following a request for an extension by Mohammed’s legal team. FICAC highlighted that this achievement underscores its commitment to financial accountability, asserting that criminal convictions must be accompanied by financial restitution.

This recovery effort sends a strong message about the consequences of corruption, indicating that those who exploit public resources will be pursued not only in court but also in terms of financial penalties. FICAC reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that individuals benefiting from corruption are held accountable and that any ill-gotten gains are returned to the public.

Additionally, previous articles indicate that FICAC is also actively tackling other corruption cases by appealing sentences deemed too lenient and working to enhance public awareness about corruption through educational initiatives. This holistic approach reflects a robust strategy to foster a culture of integrity and accountability in Fiji, promoting a more transparent governance framework.

FICAC’s proactive measures demonstrate that while challenges remain, there is a hopeful narrative emerging for a future with reduced corruption and strengthened governance. This is an encouraging development in the ongoing fight against corruption in Fiji, fostering public trust and commitment to maintaining a just society.
