The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced plans to appeal the sentence given to businessman Bharat Jogia and two police officers, Corporal Samuela Dakuitoga and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Iferemi Savou. The Suva Magistrate Court sentenced them to 18 months in prison after they were found guilty of bribery and abuse of office, respectively. However, Magistrate Jeremaia Savou suspended the sentences for two years.

The court referenced the character of the convicted individuals and their previous community service as mitigating factors in its decision. In addition to the suspended sentences, both Mr. Jogia and Mr. Dakuitoga were also fined $1,000, which they must pay by January 13, 2025.

The FICAC, dedicated to combating corruption in Fiji, stated they find the outcome unsatisfactory and will pursue an appeal against the sentence. This move emphasizes the commission’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and integrity in the public sector.

This appeal could serve as an important precedent in the fight against corruption in Fiji, reflecting a proactive stance by FICAC and underscoring the significance of accountability within both business and law enforcement sectors. It illustrates the ongoing effort to strengthen ethical standards and public trust in institutions.

In summary, FICAC’s pursuit of an appeal demonstrates its dedication to ensuring justice and combating corruption, which could ultimately foster greater accountability in the Fijian legal and business landscape.
