FICAC Stands Firm: No Government Interference in Investigations

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its independence, asserting that it has not experienced any form of interference from the Government. In a recent statement, FICAC clarified that neither the Government nor any political parties have influenced any of its investigations or ongoing cases, emphasizing that it strictly adheres to due processes.

FICAC referenced a prior announcement made in March, indicating that any interference was attributed to the former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, rather than the current Coalition Government. The commission also mentioned a complaint lodged by Sayed-Khaiyum to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere against former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, but the current status of this complaint remains unclear.

Over the past year, FICAC has undergone significant changes, including leadership transitions and staff turnover, which have impacted the progression of its investigations. Despite these challenges, FICAC expressed its commitment to resolving pending cases and maintaining its independence as mandated by law.
