The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to impartiality and basing decisions on evidence, assuring the public that all investigations are carried out without bias or outside influence. This statement comes in response to concerns raised by opposition leader Inia Seruiratu regarding the investigation involving the former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya.

The commission received a complaint from the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, alleging that Ms. Tabuya failed to disclose her spouse’s income and business affiliations, a requirement under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. An investigation, initiated by Former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai on April 24, confirmed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. Based on these findings, the file was recommended for closure on August 5 and was officially closed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, with the Supervisor of Elections being informed on September 20.

Honourable Seruiratu has expressed serious concerns about Commissioner Barbara Malimali’s role in the case and suggested it may have been influenced by Ms. Tabuya. In response, FICAC has clarified that all actions regarding this case occurred before Ms. Malimali became Commissioner, thus dismissing the allegations made by Seruiratu as unfounded.

FICAC strongly rejects the claims from Seruiratu, stating they undermine the integrity of the Commission’s work. The organization encourages the public and officials to verify facts before making public statements regarding its operations.

This commitment to transparency and diligence by FICAC is crucial in fostering public trust in governmental processes. It reminds us that accountability is a shared responsibility, and seeking verified information is vital for informed discourse. As FICAC continues its work against corruption, the hope is that this scrutiny will strengthen the integrity and fairness within the system and promote a greater culture of transparency.
