The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to impartiality and evidence-based decisions, emphasizing that all investigations are carried out without bias or undue influence. This statement comes in response to remarks made by opposition leader, Honourable Inia Seruiratu, surrounding recent events involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.
On April 5, 2024, FICAC received a complaint from the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) alleging that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business interests as stipulated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. An investigation was initiated by the former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Francis Puleiwai, on April 24, 2024. The inquiry revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had legally ended in December 2016, leading investigators to recommend closing the case on August 5, 2024. The official closure occurred on August 12, 2024, and the SOE was notified on September 20, 2024.
In his statements, Seruiratu raised concerns about the involvement of current FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali in the process, claiming that the case was closed based on potentially misleading information and suggesting possible influence from Ms. Tabuya. However, FICAC clarified that all procedures related to Ms. Tabuya’s case occurred before Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner. The Commission strongly rejected Seruiratu’s assertions, arguing they undermine FICAC’s integrity and responsibilities.
FICAC urged the public and officials to verify information before making allegations regarding the Commission’s operations.
This situation highlights the vital role of anti-corruption bodies in maintaining transparency and accountability in governance. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of due diligence and factual accuracy in public discourse, particularly when discussing matters of integrity and ethics in public office. FICAC’s commitment to impartiality reassures the populace that their efforts to curtail corruption continue without political interference.
