The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to fairness and evidence-driven decision-making. The Commission assures the public that all investigations and actions are taken free from bias, favoritism, or fear.

In response to remarks made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, FICAC clarified that it had received a complaint from the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024. The complaint alleged that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business interests, as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding, and Disclosures) Act.

Following the receipt of this complaint, a probe was authorized on April 24, 2024, by former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Ms. Francis Puleiwai. The investigation revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, a recommendation was made to close the case on August 5, 2024. The file closure was formally executed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024, and the SOE was notified on September 20, 2024.

FICAC emphasized that neither party engaged Ms. Malimali for representation during their divorce, as she was in private practice at that time. In his statement, Seruiratu expressed serious concerns regarding Ms. Malimali’s role in the case closure, questioning the veracity of the information involved. However, FICAC clarified that the entire process concerning Ms. Tabuya occurred before Ms. Malimali was appointed Commissioner.

The Commission firmly rejected Seruiratu’s comments, asserting that they undermine FICAC’s essential work. FICAC also urged everyone, particularly those in authority, to verify information before making public statements about the Commission’s operations.

In summary, FICAC remains steadfast in its mission to uphold integrity and conduct thorough investigations. The ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability signifies a hopeful outlook that the standards of governance can be maintained in Fiji, contributing to a more just society.
