FICAC Stands Firm Against Political Allegations

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining impartiality and making decisions based on evidence. The Commission assured the public that its investigations are conducted without bias and that actions taken are neither favoring nor fearing any party involved.

This statement comes in response to opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu’s remarks concerning the former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya. A complaint was lodged on April 5, 2024, by the office of the Supervisor of Elections, alleging that Ms. Tabuya did not disclose her spouse’s income and business connections as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

An investigation was sanctioned by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Ms. Francis Puleiwai on April 24, 2024. The inquiry revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had officially ended in December 2016. Following this finding, a recommendation to close the investigation was made on August 5, 2024, and the case was officially closed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections received a notification regarding this closure on September 20, 2024.

Honourable Seruiratu expressed concerns about Ms. Barbara Malimali, the current FICAC Commissioner, suggesting that the case closure was influenced by false information and might have involved Ms. Tabuya. However, FICAC clarified that all proceedings concerning Ms. Tabuya were concluded before Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner, refuting Seruiratu’s claims.

FICAC firmly criticized the statements made by Honourable Seruiratu as misleading, asserting that such comments could undermine the critical work the Commission is tasked with. The Commission encouraged the public and officials to verify facts before making statements regarding its operations.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency and fact-checking in political discourse. FICAC’s commitment to accountability serves as a hopeful reminder of the role of integrity within public service. The Commission’s proactive stance in addressing concerns can enhance public trust in governance and bolsters the call for responsible communication in leadership.
