The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and evidence-based decision-making. The organization assures the public that its investigations and actions are conducted without any bias, favor, or fear.
In response to remarks from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding the case of former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, FICAC clarified its position. The commission disclosed that it received a complaint on April 5, 2024, from the Supervisor of Elections (SOE), alleging that Ms. Tabuya failed to disclose her spouse’s income and business ties as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.
Following the complaint, an investigation was launched, approved by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai on April 24, 2024. The inquiry determined that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had officially been dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, on August 5, 2024, investigators recommended the case be closed, and the file was formally closed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The SOE was notified of this closure on September 20, 2024.
FICAC noted that neither Ms. Tabuya nor Mr. Semaan was represented by Ms. Malimali during their divorce, as she was in private practice at that time. In his statement, Seruiratu expressed concern about Ms. Malimali’s role in closing the case, suggesting potential influence from Ms. Tabuya. However, FICAC firmly rejected Seruiratu’s claims, asserting that the closure occurred before Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner.
FICAC condemned Seruiratu’s comments, stating they undermine the integrity of the Commission’s work. They urged the public, especially those in positions of authority, to verify their facts before issuing statements regarding the Commission’s operations.
This situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. With institutions like FICAC taking a stand against misinformation, the public can feel assured that issues of corruption are being handled with care and diligence. Such efforts contribute to a healthier political environment in Fiji and foster public trust in its institutions.
