The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to neutrality and evidence-driven decision-making. The Commission aims to assure the public that all investigations and actions are carried out without bias or favoritism.

This declaration follows remarks from opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu concerning recent developments involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya. The complaint, which was referred to FICAC by the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, alleged that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business interests as required by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

An inquiry authorized by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai on April 24, 2024, determined that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan was officially dissolved in December 2016. The investigation led to a recommendation for closing the case on August 5, 2024, which was formalized by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was officially notified of this closure on September 20, 2024.

In response to the statements made by Honourable Seruiratu, who expressed concerns regarding the role of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali in the case, the Commission clarified that the proceedings related to Ms. Tabuya occurred before Ms. Malimali’s tenure as Commissioner. FICAC firmly rejected the implication that the case was influenced by external factors and called for public figures to ensure accuracy in their statements regarding the Commission’s operations.

This situation highlights the necessity for transparency and accountability in public office, reinforcing FICAC’s pivotal role in promoting integrity within the Fijian political landscape. As FICAC continues to operate, it can serve as a catalyst for positive change, ensuring that all political leaders adhere to ethical standards and accountability.

Overall, FICAC’s commitment to impartiality is a reassuring aspect for citizens, who can trust that their governance is grounded in fairness and transparency.
