The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining impartiality and making decisions based on solid evidence. This assurance follows a statement from opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu concerning recent developments involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya.
FICAC received a complaint on April 5, 2024, sent by the Supervisor of Elections (SOE), alleging that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business ties as mandated by section 24 of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. An investigation was initiated by FICAC’s Former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Francis Puleiwai, on April 24, 2024.
The investigation revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, a recommendation for closure of the case was made on August 5, 2024, and the file was officially closed on August 12, 2024. The SOE was informed about the case closure on September 20, 2024. Notably, Ms. Barbara Malimali, who is now the FICAC Commissioner, was not involved in any aspect of the divorce proceedings between Ms. Tabuya and Mr. Semaan.
Seruiratu expressed significant concerns regarding the role of Commissioner Malimali, suggesting that the closure of the case relied on potentially misleading information and questioning whether Ms. Tabuya influenced the case through Malimali. In response, FICAC announced that Seruiratu’s assertions are erroneous, emphasizing that the entire process concerning Ms. Tabuya occurred prior to Malimali’s appointment.
FICAC firmly dismissed the allegations by Seruiratu, stating they unfairly undermine the Commission’s essential duties. Furthermore, FICAC urged the public and officials to exercise caution and verify information before making public statements regarding the Commission’s activities.
This situation underscores the importance of maintaining integrity within public office and the necessity for transparency in the investigative processes. As FICAC continues its work, it serves as a reminder for all parties involved to advocate for accountability while also respecting the established legal protocols. This commitment to transparency reflects hope for a future where corruption is confronted and eliminated, ensuring better governance for all.
In summary, FICAC has firmly stated its impartiality regarding the investigation involving Lynda Tabuya and has urged public figures to verify their information before making allegations, reinforcing the importance of accountability in government.
