FICAC in the Hot Seat: Calls for a Major Overhaul

Attorney-General Graham Leung addressed concerns regarding the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), noting that some members of the public may view the organization as questionable. During a press conference, he suggested that the media conduct their own analyses and acknowledged that FICAC could benefit from a reevaluation.

Leung, who oversees FICAC, shared his thoughts that the commission operates with a considerable budget and has a large staff, which has led to worries about its impartiality. He mentioned his visit to FICAC following his appointment, emphasizing that investigations should be guided solely by evidence, not political motives. He criticized actions such as deploying multiple officers with search warrants late at night as inappropriate.

He highlighted the need for the powers granted to FICAC to be exercised sensibly and reasonably, rejecting any notion of a witch hunt that may have emerged as a perception of the commission. Leung expressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law in a manner that is fair and not oppressive.

The Attorney-General also commented on public perceptions surrounding the appointments of judges, attorneys, and statutory board members, stating that while people are entitled to their opinions, it is essential to respect established processes. He urged the public to refrain from making defamatory or unnecessarily personal remarks.

Leung concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining civility and respect in discussions, even amidst disagreements, and affirmed that law enforcement actions should be conducted proportionately and respectfully.
