The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to impartiality and evidence-driven decision-making. The commission emphasizes that all investigations and actions are carried out free from bias, favoritism, or fear.

This statement comes in light of recent comments made by opposition leader, the Honourable Inia Seruiratu, regarding the former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, the Honourable Lynda Tabuya. A complaint, referred by the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024, alleged that Ms. Tabuya failed to declare her spouse’s income and business ties as required by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

Following the complaint, an investigation was initiated on April 24, 2024, under the direction of the former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Ms. Francis Puleiwai. The inquiry established that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, a recommendation was made to close the case on August 5, 2024, and the case was officially closed on August 12, 2024. The SOE was informed of this closure through a letter dated September 20, 2024.

In response to Seruiratu’s concerns about the involvement of FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali, FICAC clarifies that all proceedings related to Ms. Tabuya’s case occurred before Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner. The commission strongly disputes Seruiratu’s assertions, emphasizing that they undermine the integrity of FICAC’s work.

FICAC calls on the public and officials to verify facts before making statements regarding the Commission’s activities, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.

Overall, FICAC’s commitment to integrity in its operations serves as a hopeful reminder for the public that accountable governance is possible. The clarity and diligence with which the commission approaches allegations reinforce trust in the institution, encouraging a culture of transparency in Fiji’s political landscape.
