The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to remaining impartial and grounded in evidence-based decision-making. The Commission is committed to conducting all investigations without bias, influence, or fear, addressing concerns raised by opposition leader, Honourable Inia Seruiratu, regarding former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.

The matter arose from a complaint received on April 5, 2024, from the office of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE), claiming that Ms. Tabuya failed to disclose her spouse’s income and business ties as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. Following this, a probe was launched on April 24, 2024, under the investigation of former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai.

The inquiry revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, on August 5, 2024, a recommendation to close the investigation was made, with formal closure executed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The SOE was notified about this closure on September 20, 2024.

Seruiratu expressed concerns regarding FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali’s involvement in the closure, suggesting improper influences in the matter. In response, FICAC clarified that all actions concerning Ms. Tabuya’s case predated Ms. Malimali’s appointment. The Commission firmly rejected the allegations made by Seruiratu, emphasizing that such comments undermine the integrity of its operations.

FICAC encourages the public and authorities to verify facts before disseminating statements concerning the Commission’s work, emphasizing accountability and transparency in governance.

This incident highlights the importance of investigatory bodies maintaining their integrity while navigating political landscapes. It serves as a reminder for public figures to base their claims on verified information, strengthening the relationship between the government and its institutions.

In summary, while concerns have been raised, FICAC stands firm in its commitment to impartiality, transparent investigations, and delivering justice based solely on factual evidence.
