FICAC Deputy Commissioner Resigns Amid Controversy

Francis Puleiwai, the acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), submitted her resignation to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) yesterday. After a meeting with the JSC, she informed the media of her decision, stating she could not continue to work in “that institution.”

Puleiwai revealed that her resignation was prompted by reports suggesting that Barbara Malimali would continue in her role as FICAC Commissioner. Her resignation became effective immediately.

“I have tendered my resignation to the JSC,” Puleiwai confirmed. “Unfortunately, I will not be able to work in that institution when we know that a suspect is there.” This comment referred to Malimali, who was reportedly questioned by investigators upon her arrival at work the same day.

When asked whether she perceived a compromise in FICAC’s independence, Puleiwai expressed hope that it was not the case. “I hope for the best and I hope that justice will prevail in this matter and that all of this will be brought to light,” she stated.

Puleiwai also addressed concerns from Attorney-General Graham Leung regarding her investigation into Malimali’s conduct. “I don’t have any vested interest. The only interest that I have is for the rule of law to be upheld,” she said. She clarified that the complaint existed before her application and that her sole concern was ensuring the rule of law was respected.
