The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Babara Malimali, has yet to complete her review of the proposed further disclosures in the case involving former Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and current CFO Vimlesh Sagar. During a recent court session, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana informed Suva Magistrate Krishan Prasad that, although a written response had been prepared regarding the matter, it was still pending Ms. Malimali’s evaluation.
The defense attorneys for Sayed-Khaiyum and Sagar chose not to enter pleas until all necessary disclosures are made available. Magistrate Prasad has set a deadline of January for FICAC to clarify its position concerning the charges.
Sayed-Khaiyum faces allegations of abusing his office for personal gain, specifically accused of racking up $138,813.37 in legal costs without receiving board approval from July 2017 to January 2023. Meanwhile, Sagar is charged with general dishonesty that allegedly resulted in a loss of $15,075.88 through unauthorized payments to R Patel Lawyers in 2023.
The case is scheduled to continue on January 24.
This ongoing investigation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in public offices. Both defendants have the opportunity to present their case in court, and the legal proceedings will ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law. The situation also serves as a reminder of the critical role of regulatory bodies like FICAC in maintaining integrity within government institutions.
