The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has affirmed its dedication to impartiality and evidence-driven decision-making, reassuring the public that all inquiries and actions are executed without favoritism or apprehension. This statement comes in light of concerns raised by opposition leader, Honourable Inia Seruiratu, regarding the former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.
On April 5, 2024, FICAC received a complaint referred by the Supervisor of Elections, alleging that Ms. Tabuya had neglected to declare her spouse’s income and business ties, in violation of section 24 of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an investigation was sanctioned on April 24, 2024, by former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Francis Puleiwai.
The investigation determined that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. A recommendation to close the inquiry was made on August 5, 2024, and officially closed by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was notified of this closure on September 20, 2024.
Honourable Seruiratu has raised concerns regarding Ms. Barbara Malimali, the current FICAC Commissioner, suggesting that the closure of the case was based on potentially misleading information and insinuating improper influence from Ms. Tabuya. FICAC has firmly countered this assertion, noting that the investigation and the closure of the file were concluded prior to Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner, therefore, her involvement was non-existent in this process.
FICAC rejects the comments made by Honourable Seruiratu, claiming they undermine the integrity of the Commission’s work. The organization encourages the public and individuals in positions of authority to verify facts thoroughly before making statements concerning its operational conduct.
The commitment shown by FICAC to uphold transparency and accountability during the investigation process is commendable. It highlights the importance of due diligence and fact-checking in all matters of governance and public service. In a landscape often clouded by disputes and allegations, FICAC’s emphasis on impartiality acts as a reassuring factor for the citizens of Fiji.
