The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting investigations impartially and based on evidence, ensuring that all actions taken are free from bias. This statement comes in response to comments from opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu concerning the case involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.

On April 5, 2024, FICAC received a complaint from the office of the Supervisor of Elections, claiming that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business ties as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. An investigation was initiated by the FICAC, which confirmed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally terminated in December 2016. On August 5, 2024, the investigators recommended closing the case, and this recommendation was officially accepted by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Ms. Francis Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was notified of the case closure on September 20, 2024.

Honourable Seruiratu expressed significant concern regarding the involvement of FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali, suggesting that the case closure was based on incorrect information potentially influenced by Ms. Tabuya. FICAC has stated that these comments are unfounded, emphasizing that the investigation and its closure occurred before Ms. Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner. The Commission condemned Seruiratu’s remarks as damaging to FICAC’s reputation and underscored the importance of verifying facts before making public statements about its operations.

This situation highlights the necessity for transparency and accountability in public office. It also serves as a reminder for political leaders to approach such matters with accuracy and responsibility. By emphasizing meritocratic processes and the importance of evidence, FICAC upholds the integrity of its mission, which can instill confidence in the public about efforts toward combating corruption.

In summary, the FICAC stands firm against allegations of bias while reiterating its commitment to lawful and unbiased operations. It is a hopeful indication of the organization’s resolve to maintain its credibility and effectiveness in safeguarding public trust.
