The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to impartiality and evidence-based decision-making, reassuring the public that all investigations are carried out without favoritism or fear. This statement follows comments from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu concerning the recent situation involving former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya.

FICAC explained that a complaint was lodged on April 5, 2024, through the office of the Supervisor of Elections, alleging Ms. Tabuya’s failure to declare her spouse’s income and business interests, as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. An investigation was initiated on April 24, 2024, confirming that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016. The investigators recommended closing the case on August 5, 2024, and the file was officially closed by the former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Francis Puleiwai, on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was notified of the closure on September 20, 2024.

FICAC clarified that neither party was represented by current Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali during the divorce proceedings while she was in private practice. Seruiratu has expressed concerns about Malimali’s role in the case closure, suggesting possible influence from Ms. Tabuya. However, FICAC firmly denied the accuracy of Seruiratu’s claims, stating that the entire process occurred before Malimali’s tenure as Commissioner.

The Commission emphasized the importance of verifying facts before making public statements about its operations, urging individuals in positions of authority to exercise caution.

This reaffirmation of FICAC’s commitment to accountability and transparency is a positive sign for Fiji’s governance. By addressing these claims and reinforcing their unbiased approach, the Commission aims to maintain public trust and confidence in their work. Ultimately, a vigilant and informed public, alongside an impartial investigative body, can contribute to a stronger democracy and healthier political discourse.
