The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to fairness and evidence-driven decision-making, emphasizing that all investigations and actions are conducted without bias, favoritism, or fear. This statement comes in response to comments made by the opposition leader, the Honourable Inia Seruiratu, concerning recent developments involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.

On April 5, 2024, FICAC received a complaint, relayed by the Office of the Supervisor of Elections, alleging that Ms. Tabuya had not disclosed her spouse’s income and business interests as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an investigation was authorized on April 24, 2024, led by Former Acting Deputy Commissioner Ms. Francis Puleiwai.

The inquiry revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had legally ended in December 2016. Investigators subsequently recommended the closure of the case, which was formally concluded on August 12, 2024, and the Supervisor of Elections was notified on September 20, 2024.

Honourable Seruiratu has expressed serious concerns regarding the actions of FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali, claiming that the case closure may have been influenced by Ms. Tabuya. FICAC, however, clarified that the entire process—including the complaint, investigation, and case closure—occurred before Ms. Malimali was appointed as Commissioner.

In light of these allegations, FICAC condemned the remarks made by Honourable Seruiratu, stating they undermine the integrity of the Commission’s work. FICAC also urges the public and officials to ensure they verify facts before making statements regarding its operations.

This situation illustrates the importance of maintaining independence and integrity within organizations responsible for upholding the law and ethical governance. The Commission’s prompt response serves to bolster public confidence in its role as a guardian against corruption, emphasizing the necessity for factual accuracy in public discourse.
