The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to unbiased and evidence-based investigations, assuring the public that all actions are conducted impartially. This statement comes in response to remarks made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu concerning the recent case of former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya.
According to FICAC, a complaint was lodged by the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024, alleging that Ms. Tabuya did not declare her spouse’s income and business interests, a requirement under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an investigation was initiated by the former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Ms. Francis Puleiwai, on April 24, 2024. The investigation concluded that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016, leading to the recommendation for the file’s closure on August 5, 2024.
FICAC formally closed the case on August 12, 2024, with the SOE being notified of this resolution on September 20, 2024. The Commission clarified that during the divorce proceedings, neither party was represented by Ms. Malimali, who was still in private practice at that time.
In addressing Seruiratu’s concerns about potential bias from FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali, the Commission emphasized that the investigation and its closure occurred before her official appointment. FICAC strongly dismissed Seruiratu’s accusations, asserting that they undermine the integrity of their work and urging public figures to verify information before making statements about FICAC’s operations.
This assurance from FICAC serves to reinforce the integrity of governmental oversight and the importance of objective investigations, which are crucial for upholding public trust in institutions. Given the complexities of political accountability and the need for transparency, this situation highlights the ongoing commitment of organizations like FICAC to address allegations of misconduct thoroughly and without bias.
