The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced the closure of a complaint against former Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya, which alleged that she failed to declare her spouse’s income. This decision was made by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai on August 12, 2024, prior to the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner on September 5, 2024.

In response to comments made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding potential political influence in the closure of the case, FICAC clarified that all actions related to Ms. Tabuya’s case were completed before Ms. Malimali took office. FICAC strongly rejected Seruiratu’s claims, asserting that they undermine the integrity of the Commission and emphasized its commitment to impartiality and adherence to evidence-based decision-making.

The complaint, which was referred by the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, alleged that Ms. Tabuya did not declare her spouse’s income and business interests as required by law. An investigation confirmed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had legally ended in December 2016, leading to the recommendation for closure of the case on August 5, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was formally notified of this decision on September 20, 2024.

FICAC has called on the public, especially those in influential positions, to verify facts before making public statements regarding its operations.

This incident underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in public office, as well as the vital role of independent commissions in maintaining the integrity of governance. It also emphasizes the need for factual discussions in the political landscape to foster trust in institutions.
