Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga has emerged as a controversial figure within the Coalition Government after he referred to the media’s coverage of the FICAC situation as an “obsession.” This comment came when he was approached by reporters in Parliament last week for his views on the ongoing controversy involving the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Turaga questioned the focus on FICAC, stating, “What’s this obsession with this FICAC controversy?” He also rejected allegations of ministerial interference regarding the situation.
The commission has been in the news for several months, particularly following the appointment of its commissioner, Barbara Malimali, who was under investigation by FICAC at the time of her appointment. Ms. Malimali was appointed by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere based on a recommendation from the Judicial Service Commission, in consultation with government legal advisor Graham Leung. Both the President and the Judicial Service Commission have defended the appointment process.
Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has been critical of the current Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, for his delayed response to the unfolding events surrounding FICAC. Meanwhile, the Cabinet is set to convene today to discuss an agenda item regarding the potential establishment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the discrepancies related to the FICAC saga.
