FICAC Closes Controversial Cases Against Fiji’s Minister for Women

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has notified the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, about the closure of two cases involving Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya. The closure of these cases was approved on August 12, 2024, and subsequently communicated to the Supervisor of Elections on September 20, 2024.

The first case involved a complaint received from the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, concerning allegations of false and non-declaration of income. FICAC registered this complaint and conducted an inquiry. The investigation revealed that the only required declaration from Tabuya was related to her candidacy statement for the general elections, which she submitted in 2022. Consequently, FICAC decided to close the file.

In the second case, a complaint was referred to FICAC by the Supervisor of Elections on May 24, 2024, regarding alleged false and non-declaration under Section 24 of the Political Parties Act. After assessing the complaint and conducting an inquiry, FICAC found no requirement for the Minister to disclose any spousal information, as she has been divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016. Therefore, FICAC also chose to close this file.

The results of the preliminary inquiries from both cases have been forwarded to the Supervisor of Elections.
