The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced that Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the First Citizen, has no case to answer. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement, confirming that FICAC has closed the investigation concerning complaints against the President.
Mr. Rabuka stated that Ratu Katonivere will remain the Coalition Government’s candidate for the presidency. The election is set to occur during a special session of Parliament later this month.
He mentioned that some discomfort had arisen regarding certain nominees for the presidency, which prompted him to withdraw his own nominee for the election. The preliminary investigation involved the Financial Intelligence Unit, which provided information that was adequate to refute the allegations against Ratu Wiliame.
According to Rabuka, FICAC also verified the declared Assets and Liabilities in the FIU report and found no evidence to back the claims made by the complainant, thus officially closing the case.
