FICAC Clears Minister of Corruption Charges: What’s Next?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has notified the Supervisor of Election, Ana Mataiciwa, regarding the closure of two cases involving the Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya. FICAC announced that the cases were approved for closure on August 12, 2024, and communicated this to the Supervisor of Elections on September 20, 2024.

In the first case, a complaint referred by the Supervisor of Elections to FICAC on April 5, 2024, alleged false and non-declaration of income. FICAC registered the complaint, conducted an inquiry, and ultimately concluded that the only necessary declaration related to Tabuya’s statement of candidacy for the general elections, which she submitted in 2022. Consequently, FICAC decided to close this file.

The second case was referred to FICAC on May 24, 2024, concerning false and non-declaration under Section 24 of the Political Parties Act. Following an assessment and inquiry, FICAC determined that there was no obligation for Minister Tabuya to disclose any information regarding her former spouse, as she has been divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016. Based on this finding, FICAC also chose to close this file.

The results from the preliminary inquiries for both cases have been forwarded to the Supervisor of Elections.
