FICAC Clears Minister of Corruption Allegations: What’s Next?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has informed the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, about the closure of two cases involving the Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya. The decision to close these cases was made on August 12, 2024, and was referred to the Supervisor of Elections on September 20, 2024.

The first case involved a complaint made to FICAC by the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, concerning allegations of false and non-declarations of income. Following the assessment and inquiry by FICAC, it was determined that the only declaration required from Tabuya was related to her statement of candidacy for the general elections, which she submitted in 2022. Consequently, FICAC chose to close this case.

In the second case, initiated on May 24, 2024, the Supervisor of Elections referred a complaint to FICAC related to false and non-declaration of information under Section 24 of the Political Parties Act. After conducting an inquiry, FICAC concluded that there was no obligation for Minister Tabuya to disclose any spousal information, as she has been divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016. Therefore, FICAC has also decided to close this file.

The findings from the preliminary inquiries for both cases have been shared with the Supervisor of Elections.
