FICAC Clears Minister Lynda Tabuya of Corruption Claims: What’s Next?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has communicated with the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, regarding the closure of two cases involving Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya. FICAC confirmed that these cases were officially closed on August 12, 2024, and the details were relayed to the Supervisor of Elections on September 20, 2024.

In the first case, the Supervisor of Elections had referred a complaint to FICAC on April 5, 2024, alleging false and non-declaration of income. FICAC registered the complaint, which underwent assessment and inquiry. The inquiry revealed that the only necessary declaration from Tabuya was her statement of candidacy submitted for the 2022 general elections. Consequently, FICAC decided to close this case.

The second case was referred to FICAC by the Supervisor of Elections on May 24, 2024, concerning false and non-declaration under Section 24 of the Political Parties Act. Following the registration and assessment of the complaint, the preliminary inquiry concluded that there was no obligation for Minister Tabuya to disclose any spousal information, as she has been divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016. FICAC also chose to close this file, and the findings from both preliminary inquiries have been forwarded to the Supervisor of Elections.
