Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali has confirmed her participation in a meeting with the Commission of Inquiry concerning allegations of abuse of office against her. While addressing the situation, Ms. Malimali acknowledged the investigation and the public discourse surrounding her appointment to the position.

“The Commission of Inquiry is indeed ongoing,” Ms. Malimali stated. She noted that it is known that some opposed her appointment and that she is currently facing allegations of misconduct. Importantly, she clarified that the matter is being investigated by the Fiji Police Force, rather than her own commission.

“To maintain the integrity of the process, I can only say that the Commission of Inquiry has started, and I have engaged in a preliminary meeting with the commissioner,” she added.

This situation reflects a critical moment for accountability within Fiji’s political realm, emphasizing the importance of due process in investigating allegations against public officials.

With ongoing investigations, there remains a focused effort to uphold transparency and governance in Fiji. The unfolding events will be pivotal in reinforcing faith in the country’s institutions and ensuring that all individuals are held accountable under the law.
