The Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali commenced today. The inquiry is set to feature prominent figures, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Chief Justice Salesi Temo, among the 35 witnesses called to testify.

Senior legal counsel Janet Mason emphasized that the commission aims to determine whether the appointment of Ms. Malimali was executed with integrity, fairness, and transparency, in accordance with legal standards. The inquiry will investigate any potential improper influences during the appointment process.

Due to the sensitive nature of the proceedings, the hearings will be conducted in private, excluding public and media access to ensure that ongoing criminal investigations are not compromised. Ms. Mason highlighted the importance of confidentiality during this process.

The proceedings are taking place at the Supreme Court complex in Suva, with a report anticipated to be delivered to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Prime Minister Rabuka by January 31.

This inquiry represents a significant step toward upholding accountability and integrity within Fiji’s governance structures, reflecting a commitment to transparency in public service appointments.

Overall, the inquiry could foster a positive change in Fiji, reinforcing the importance of ethical standards in public offices and reinforcing public trust in institutions.
