FICAC Addresses Break-In: No Files Stolen, Public Misled?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) recently addressed concerns regarding a break-in that occurred two months ago at its file room. In a statement to the media, FICAC confirmed that despite the unauthorized entry, no files were removed from the premises. This response came after social media posts suggested otherwise, claiming that important investigation files, including those related to Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and several other Ministers, had been stolen.

FICAC’s statement emphasized the falsehood of these claims, reassuring the public that all investigation materials are securely handled and managed by their Registry Officers. The Commission promptly initiated an investigation following the discovery of the break-in, which included reviewing CCTV footage to assess the situation.

In light of the misinformation circulating, FICAC urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or making defamatory statements online, as this could lead to legal consequences.

This proactive stance not only strengthens FICAC’s commitment to transparency but also serves as a reminder of the importance of verified information in the digital age. As discussions about governance and accountability continue, it is encouraging to see institutions taking measures to ensure the public is accurately informed. The emphasis on security and integrity in handling sensitive information reflects a positive commitment to combating corruption effectively.
