The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has chosen not to comment on the appointment of Ms. Lavi Rokoika as Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) due to ongoing court proceedings related to her appointment. In a recent statement addressing public inquiries and media questions, the JSC clarified that the validity of her appointment is currently being examined by the High Court.

The JSC emphasized that discussing the matter publicly could compromise the judicial process, underscoring its commitment to maintaining the integrity of legal proceedings. “The JSC will not compromise the integrity of the judicial process,” the Commission stated, making it clear that public legal discussions are unwarranted while the case is still pending in court.

Furthermore, the JSC reaffirmed its role, which is clearly delineated in the Constitution. It highlights that its recommendations for appointments are made to the President after consulting with the Attorney General, adhering strictly to both constitutional and legal protocols. The Commission noted that disputes should not be adjudicated through the media but through the proper judicial channels.

In its statement, the JSC reiterated its unwavering commitment to fairness, independence, and the rule of law. It acknowledged that public confidence in the judiciary is best preserved by allowing courts to assess matters impartially, free from external influences. The Commission intends to continue fulfilling its constitutional duties with integrity and independence as the legal proceedings progress.

This situation reflects the JSC’s dedication to upholding the rule of law while respecting the judicial process, providing a hopeful outlook for maintaining public trust in Fiji’s legal system.
