FHL Tower Work Resumes: A Beacon of Safety and Hope in Fiji’s Construction Industry

Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL) has announced that it has resumed rectification work on the FHL Tower following the lifting of a stop order. This decision comes after the compliance certification with occupational health and safety regulations was achieved. The work had previously come to a halt after a tragic incident at the construction site in which one worker lost their life and another was injured.

FHL confirmed that all recommended safety measures have been integrated into current work practices to create a safer environment for workers. The company stated that the necessary materials sourced internationally have arrived on site, and temporary power has been restored, allowing construction to continue. Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has also provided clearance for the tower’s electrical installations, confirming compliance with utility protocols.

The ambitious $67 million project, which is a 17-storey green building, was originally scheduled to be completed in 2022; however, delays have extended the timeline significantly, now reaching a construction duration of over seven years.

FHL expressed its determination to focus on completion while adhering to all statutory and safety requirements. The company emphasized its partnership with the main contractor and relevant authorities to ensure steady progress, underscoring a commitment to the safety and well-being of all involved in the project.

This marked resumption of work is a positive development, as it signals FHL’s dedication to rebuilding trust and ensuring the implementation of enhanced safety standards. Given the previous incidents and the financial backing FHL received through oversubscribed corporate bonds, community stakeholders can remain hopeful that the project will eventually provide significant contributions to the local economy and improve Suva’s skyline once completed. This commitment to safety and responsible construction practices could potentially set a new standard within the construction industry in Fiji, promoting safer work environments for all future developments.
