Training during the festive season can be a challenge for many athletes, and Lavidi Brothers captain Sefanaia Vuli is no exception as his team gears up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. The Lavidi Brothers are one of the 16 teams competing in the men’s division.

Vuli acknowledged that holiday celebrations have made it difficult for players to maintain their training routines, with many choosing to return to their villages for Christmas and New Year festivities. “Family functions, feasting, and drinking kava always make it tough to keep up with training during this season,” he remarked. Fortunately, he noted that most team members participated in training sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes, which contributed to their preparations.

As a former member of the national sevens squad, Vuli expressed his hope to return to the national team soon. After a brief stint with the Kaiviti Silktails, he is now focused on rugby union. “We are putting in the effort to ensure consistency in our fitness levels, knowing that the Coral Coast 7s is among the most challenging tournaments in the country,” he said. Inspired by former captain George Bose’s success, Vuli aims to see more of his teammates showcase their talents during this competition.

His personal goal for the year is to rejoin the national sevens squad, and he is ready to step in if the opportunity arises. The team also includes notable national sevens squad members Iosefo Namoce and Livai Ikanikoda. Recently, the Lavidi Brothers finished as runner-up at the 31st R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s held at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori, indicating their competitive potential.

This upcoming tournament not only serves as a platform for Vuli and his teammates to demonstrate their skills but also fosters a spirit of resilience and determination among the players, highlighting the dedication required to excel in sports despite seasonal distractions.

Overall, this commitment to training and improvement showcases the team’s focus and ambition as they look forward to a successful campaign at the Coral Coast 7s.
