The Land Transport Authority has issued a crucial reminder to all road users, especially pedestrians and passengers, to be more vigilant and responsible as traffic is set to increase during the festive season. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that there have been a total of 75 road fatalities recorded this year, which marks an increase from 62 fatalities during the same timeframe last year. Among the sadly recorded fatalities, 29 were pedestrians.
Rokosawa pointed out that four of these pedestrian incidents involved individuals who were deemed at fault, while three fatalities stemmed from intoxicated pedestrians. He further emphasized that of the total fatalities, 22 involved passengers and 24 were drivers, underscoring that all individuals on the road, not just drivers, are at risk of serious road trauma.
“Pedestrians remain one of the most vulnerable groups on the roads, especially during times of heightened traffic, poor visibility, and challenging weather conditions. The festive season typically sees increased vehicle movement, extended travel times, and unpredictable driving environments, all of which escalate risks for pedestrians in both urban areas and along highways,” Rokosawa noted.
A key factor contributing to pedestrian accidents is lack of visibility, particularly at night or during heavy rainfall. Pedestrians wearing dark clothing or those walking close to roadways, as well as those crossing at non-designated areas, are at a higher risk of being overlooked by drivers, which can significantly diminish reaction times and elevate the potential for serious injuries or fatalities.
Rokosawa strongly advises pedestrians to utilize designated crossings, footbridges, and traffic signals consistently, particularly in busy towns and along highway routes. He encouraged improving visibility by wearing bright or reflective clothing and carrying a light source when walking at night or in adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, the Authority will continue collaborating with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders to implement joint enforcement initiatives, public education campaigns, and focused awareness programs aimed at reducing road accidents. This proactive approach aims to foster a safer driving environment for everyone during the festive season and beyond.
