Five individuals narrowly avoided serious injuries in a car accident in Saqani during the early hours of the morning. The incident occurred after 2 a.m. in Delaivatu, with authorities indicating that the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. While one passenger was taken to Savusavu Hospital for treatment, the others were treated and released.
SSP Divuana emphasized the dangers of drinking and driving, highlighting that this behavior poses a significant threat to all road users. He reported that from January 1 to November 15, 2024, a total of 272 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence, putting both their lives and the lives of others at risk.
As the festive season approaches, SSP Divuana is urging everyone—drivers and pedestrians alike—to reassess their attitudes toward road safety. He remarked, “Choosing to drink and drive means choosing injury or death, as it impairs your ability to focus and coordinate.”
With many celebrations involving alcohol, he stressed the collective responsibility of road safety, stating that it’s vital for everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians—to engage in safe practices to prevent further tragedies.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of making responsible choices on the road, especially during times of increased social activities. As we head into the holiday season, fostering a culture of safety and responsibility can lead to a joyous and incident-free celebration for all. By actively encouraging safe practices, communities can work together to reduce the risks associated with impaired driving.
