Festive Season Unrest: Will Alcohol Bans Make a Difference?

Recent social media footage showcases a police officer struggling to contain an inebriated individual in Lautoka’s central business district. This chaotic scene, reminiscent of a boxing match, raises concerns as we approach the festive season, which is often plagued by alcohol-related incidents and public disturbances during the Christmas period. Disturbingly, such incidents are a common occurrence across the nation during the holidays. In light of this, comments have emerged urging for an alcohol ban during December, similar to the complaints regarding fireworks on Diwali. Many feel that the sight of drunken altercations detracts from the peace of Christmas celebrations.

In a different vein, the ongoing water crisis continues to frustrate residents. The anticipation surrounding improvements from the new government has largely faded, as tap water supply remains severely limited, with many areas receiving no service at all. Residents are advised to store water when possible and take precautions by boiling their drinking water. Suggestions for a clearer timetable for water truck deliveries might help alleviate the inconvenience faced by affected communities. While the situation appears bleak, there is still hope for improvements.

On another note, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently inaugurated the new $29 million Ba Court Complex. However, questions have arisen about the necessity of such an expensive facility when more cost-effective solutions might have sufficed. Some residents express concerns over the dire state of infrastructure elsewhere, particularly the roads on Ovalau, which remain in disrepair. Critics urge that funds should be allocated to improve essential services rather than constructing grand buildings.

Lastly, a lighthearted commentary suggests that in response to last year’s Diwali festivities, parents might take on the responsibility of making sweets, posing a potential shift in tradition.

In summary, various concerns have been raised regarding public behavior during festive seasons, ongoing water issues, infrastructure spending, and community engagement during celebrations. It is worth noting that through these challenges, there remains a collective hope for positive change and improvement in the lives of residents, showcasing resilience and the desire for community well-being.
