The police are intensifying their efforts to combat illegal drug activities during the festive season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu has made it clear that law enforcement will focus on anyone suspected of drug-related offenses.
ACP Driu stated, “We are targeting anyone suspected of drugs,” and outlined that police will conduct checks at known drug hotspots as well as monitoring vehicles and vessels during this period. He highlighted that drug arrests are being made on a daily basis as the police enhance operations to tackle the illicit trade, particularly during the bustling holiday season.
The most recent incident occurred at the Nadonumai roundabout in Lami, outside Suva, where officers stopped a vehicle for a routine check. The driver allegedly threatened the officer, leading to a deeper investigation. With assistance from the K-9 Unit, officers found a plastic wrapper containing five dried branches and leaves believed to be marijuana. Further searches at the suspect’s home uncovered a zip-lock bag with more suspected marijuana. The suspect is currently in custody at the Lami Police Station while investigations continue.
ACP Driu has urged the community to support police efforts in the fight against drugs, emphasizing that this operation is just one of many aimed at reducing drug-related crimes during the holiday season.
This robust approach not only seeks to disrupt illegal drug activities but also bolsters community safety, ensuring that the festive season remains joyful and secure for everyone. By rallying public support, the police aim to create an environment where citizens actively participate in keeping their neighborhoods drug-free, fostering a sense of collective responsibility.
