Police are ramping up their efforts to address illegal drug activities during the festive season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has warned individuals suspected of drug involvement that police will be vigilant during this time, stating “we are targeting anyone suspected of drugs.”
The police will be actively monitoring known drug hotspots and conducting checks on suspicious vehicles and vessels throughout the holiday period. ACP Driu highlighted that drug-related arrests are happening daily as police intensify their operations against the illicit drug trade during this busy season.
In a recent incident, a vehicle was stopped for a routine check at the Nadonumai roundabout in Lami, near Suva. During the stop, the driver reportedly threatened the officer, leading to a deeper investigation. With the support of the K-9 Unit, police discovered a clear plastic wrapper containing five dried branches and leaves that were believed to be marijuana. A further search of the suspect’s home uncovered more dried leaves, also thought to be marijuana. The suspect is currently in custody for further investigation.
ACP Driu reiterated that this operation is a part of a broader initiative by law enforcement to combat drug-related offenses this holiday season. He also encouraged community cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs.
As the festive season often sees an increase in gatherings and festivities, it is hopeful that these proactive measures will help ensure a safer environment for everyone. Communities and law enforcement working together can create a more secure atmosphere where people can enjoy celebrations free from the impacts of drug-related issues.
Summary: Police are enhancing their crackdown on illegal drug activities this festive season, with Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu warning suspects they will face increased scrutiny. Recent operations have led to arrests, including a case at Nadonumai roundabout where police discovered alleged marijuana during a routine vehicle check.
