The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging retailers to avoid exploiting consumers during the festive season. FCCC’s chief executive, Joel Abraham, has emphasized that strict measures will be implemented against any businesses that engage in unethical practices such as price gouging, misleading promotions, or general unfair conduct.

“Let’s work together to ensure the festive spirit remains unblemished by dishonest behavior,” Abraham stated. He noted that FCCC’s teams have been actively monitoring compliance leading up to Christmas, conducting over 700 inspections throughout November aimed at detecting and preventing dishonest practices.

During these inspections, the FCCC uncovered 44 potential violations, which included issues such as overcharging and failing to display prices or to adjust prices in accordance with duty and VAT reductions. The agency is prepared to take appropriate enforcement actions against those found in violation, which could involve sending warning letters, placing businesses under surveillance, or prosecuting offenders.

As part of their ongoing efforts, the FCCC has already conducted 417 inspections this month in anticipation of the heightened shopping activity associated with the holiday season, ensuring traders are adhering to fair practices and safeguarding consumer rights.

Moreover, Abraham took the opportunity to remind everyone that the holiday season is also a time for kindness and community. He encouraged individuals to check in on vulnerable members of their community, such as elderly neighbors or those who may be alone during the holidays. Simple acts of kindness, like sharing a meal or providing companionship, can significantly impact those in need.

In summary, the FCCC is dedicated to maintaining fair trade practices during the festive season, while also highlighting the importance of compassion within the community. As consumers and businesses come together this holiday season, there is hope that a spirit of goodwill will prevail, ensuring that everyone enjoys a festive atmosphere free from exploitation.
