The Fiji Police Force has reported a significant week of enforcement, with 76 individuals arrested across the nation for drug-related offenses. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu emphasized the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to tackle drug crimes, particularly ramping up efforts during the festive season.
Among the arrests, a 64-year-old man was apprehended at Ba fish market with seven sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. A 63-year-old carpenter from Bua was found with five green plants believed to be the same substance. In another incident, a 58-year-old man in Lautoka was caught with a shopping bag containing dried leaves along with over three thousand dollars thought to be linked to drug trade profits.
Further arrests included a 53-year-old farmer from Labasa found with a sachet of dried leaves, a 52-year-old bowser attendant apprehended with three sachets at Wainibokasi, and a 51-year-old electrician who had eight small and one large plastic bag of a white substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
The youngest individual arrested was a 19-year-old farmer from Savusavu, who was found with five sachets of dried leaves. Interestingly, two women, aged 19 and 25, were also apprehended for not paying their taxi fare, during which police discovered marijuana in their possession.
An individual from Makoi attempted to bribe police officers upon his arrest with two sachets of suspected marijuana.
Assistant Commissioner Driu noted that these arrests were made through various methods such as stop searches, roadblocks, raids, and assistance from the K-9 Unit, reflecting a proactive approach to maintaining community safety.
This increased vigilance by the Fiji Police demonstrates their dedication to fostering a safer environment, not just during the holiday season but continuously. The operations highlight the importance of community collaboration in tackling drug-related issues, inviting citizens to remain aware and report suspicious activities.
