Police have made significant progress in tackling drug-related offenses in the Northern Division, having arrested five individuals, including a 50-year-old businessman, over two days. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed these arrests, which highlight the ongoing efforts to combat drug use and trafficking in the area.
The operation began on Friday, December 27, in Naweni Village, Savusavu, where police discovered branches of what they suspect to be marijuana hanging inside a residence. Following this find, a male suspect was taken into custody, and the dried leaves are now undergoing analysis to confirm their content.
On the following day, police arrested four additional suspects in Labasa. Among them, a businessman was apprehended with two sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana, packaged in aluminum foil. A 20-year-old student was also arrested in the same vicinity with one sachet of similar nature. Additionally, at Naduna Settlement, a farmer and a woman were caught with various containers holding dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
All seized substances have been sent for testing, and police are awaiting the results. As part of their commitment to a safer community, law enforcement officials indicated that they would continue their drug infiltration operations throughout the festive season.
