Sixteen individuals were taken into custody yesterday for suspected possession of illegal drugs across various divisions. The Central Division accounted for seven arrests, including two men who were intercepted upon disembarking from a shipping vessel at Mua-i-Walu. In the Southern Division, six people were arrested, while one individual was apprehended in the Eastern Division. Additionally, two arrests were reported in the Northern Division.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized the police’s ongoing efforts to crack down on drug-related offenses, especially during this festive season. “As I have mentioned previously, arrests occur on a daily basis, and we will continue to charge individuals and bring them before the courts for possession of illegal substances,” ACP Driu stated.
He also highlighted the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to disrupting the drug trade, particularly with the anticipated influx of drugs during the holiday period. While noting that the Christmas Eve operations were conducted smoothly, ACP Driu reassured the public that the police would persist in their advocacy for community safety and security.
This proactive approach by law enforcement reflects a determined effort to ensure a safer environment for all, especially during a time when festive celebrations peak. With continuous vigilance and community cooperation, there is hope for a decrease in drug-related incidents in the future.
