Police in Fiji have apprehended five individuals, including a 50-year-old businessman, in connection to drug-related offenses within the Northern Division over a two-day period. This information was confirmed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu.

On Friday, December 27, police conducted a search in Naweni Village, Savusavu, where they discovered branches of what appeared to be marijuana hanging inside a residence. A male suspect was taken into custody, and the dried leaves have been confiscated for analysis.

The following day, four more arrests were made in various locations in Labasa. In the area of Tuatua, the 50-year-old businessman was found with two sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana, appropriately wrapped in aluminum foil. Additionally, a 20-year-old student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was also found with a sachet of similar dried leaves. Meanwhile, in Naduna Settlement, a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman were discovered with a sealed plastic bag, a sachet, and a jar containing dried leaves, all believed to be marijuana.

ACP Driu confirmed that all of the seized materials have been sent for analysis as they await results. He also stated that law enforcement will continue to conduct drug raids and special operations throughout the festive season in an effort to uphold community safety.

This proactive police activity illustrates a commitment to addressing drug-related issues in the community, especially during a time when gatherings and celebrations tend to increase. Efforts like these may serve to deter drug use and promote a safer environment for all residents.
