The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced a significant escalation in their enforcement measures aimed at ensuring road safety during the festive season, as a response to rising incidents of reckless driving. This initiative includes an increase in on-ground officers conducting spot checks, monitoring speed limits, and ensuring compliance with regulations governing Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
This decision follows a serious road accident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a driver reportedly lost control of a vehicle, leading to injuries for 13 students. LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that this incident underscores a concerning trend in road safety, especially involving PSV drivers. He noted the critical nature of prioritizing safety and adhering to traffic laws at all times, particularly during adverse weather conditions, which can complicate vehicle control and visibility.
Rokosawa stated, “Drivers are reminded to adhere to speed limits and traffic signs: Speeding remains a leading cause of road accidents. Obeying posted speed limits and signage is non-negotiable.” He also highlighted the dangers of distractions, such as mobile phone use, as well as the risks associated with fatigue, negligence, and inattention while driving.
The LTA has warned that drivers who jeopardize others’ safety will face severe legal repercussions, which may include hefty fines, suspension, or even cancellation of their driving licenses in cases of extreme negligence. Rokosawa reiterated that road safety is a collective responsibility, stating that actions undermining this safety could lead to tragic outcomes.
He stressed the importance of treating road safety with the highest priority, noting, “The lives of Fijians are too precious to lose due to preventable incidents.” The LTA’s heightened efforts serve as a crucial reminder for all drivers to be vigilant and responsible, promoting a safer driving environment during the holiday season.
In summary, the LTA is taking proactive measures to enhance road safety during the busy festive period, driven by recent accidents that highlight the urgent need for adherence to traffic laws. This initiative reflects a commitment to protecting the lives of all road users in Fiji.
By encouraging increased compliance with safety regulations, the LTA aims to foster a culture of responsibility among drivers, contributing to a safer community for everyone during a time that should be celebrated.
