A four-day festival held in Savusavu last week successfully raised $48,000, dedicated to youth development initiatives. The Cakaudrove Multi-Ethnic Youth and Sports Festival, co-organized by the Cakaudrove Youth Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, aimed to foster community engagement and support for local youth.
Aubrey Whippy, coordinator of the festival committee, highlighted that the queen contestants contributed significantly, raising a total of $30,716.15. He expressed gratitude towards the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, and his team, including divisional North manager Walter Matalau, for their vital support in making the first carnival a success.
During the event, Miss Vaturova, Temalesi Tuiwalese, was crowned as Miss Cakaudrove Youth at Narain Park in Savusavu. Regarding the utilization of the funds, Whippy mentioned that discussions would take place to determine how to allocate the money effectively for investments, development projects in Cakaudrove, and operational expenses.
Looking ahead, the festival team aims to organize an even larger carnival next year, with plans to include representation from all 15 districts and engage more communities, including Indo-Fijians and those from the islands of Rabi and Kioa.
Whippy also commended the sponsors and everyone involved in helping the event succeed. Additionally, Rosi Toroca, representing the district of Koroalau, was awarded the title of Miss Charity after raising $7,612.
This festival not only showcased the talent and spirit of the youth in the region but also demonstrated the power of community collaboration in driving positive change. The funds raised will undoubtedly contribute to the continued development of young people in Cakaudrove, paving the way for a brighter future.
Overall, the event serves as a promising reminder of the community’s commitment to youth empowerment and multicultural representation.
