Ferry Safety: Passengers Urged to Speak Up!

Ferry passengers in Fiji are being urged to report any defects on vessels that could jeopardize their safety. This initiative comes from Joeli Cawaki, the chief executive officer of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), amid rising concerns regarding the maintenance of ferries.

Cawaki emphasized the crucial role of passengers in identifying issues, asserting that prompt reporting allows shipping operators to address concerns swiftly, thereby enhancing public safety, especially during the busy holiday season. “Passengers pay fares with the expectation of quality service. Their safety remains paramount,” he stated.

He noted that certain ferries with known issues will be under close scrutiny during this time. Cawaki affirmed that every vessel is required to implement a safe ship management system and that crew members must prioritize public safety at all times.

When inquiries arose about violations regarding passenger capacity, Cawaki explained that inspections will be conducted on vessels to ascertain the causes of such breaches, and corrective measures will be applied before the vessels can resume their operations. “We must understand why the breach occurred and take steps to address it,” he said.

Acknowledging the financial burden of maintaining ships, he encouraged ferry operators to engage in regular maintenance to avoid significant problems in the future. He also urged passengers to report issues concerning poor seating or unsanitary conditions, as these have been common complaints highlighted on social media.

MSAF remains dedicated to monitoring vessel hygiene and enforcing safety compliance to ensure a clean and comfortable experience for all passengers. Cawaki also reminded operators to stick to shipping schedules to guarantee timely services for pick-ups and drop-offs.
