Ferry travelers in Fiji are being encouraged to report any issues with ships that could jeopardize their safety. This advice comes from Joeli Cawaki, the chief executive officer of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), amid ongoing worries surrounding the condition of some vessels.
Cawaki emphasized the urgent need to report defects to MSAF directly. This allows vessel operators to resolve issues quickly, which is especially crucial during the busy festive season. He stressed, “Passengers pay fares with the expectation of quality service. Their safety remains paramount.”
The CEO mentioned that certain vessels known for having defects will be subject to closer scrutiny during this time. He stated that each ship must implement a safe ship management system and that crew members must prioritize public safety at all times.
In response to questions regarding breaches of passenger capacity limits, Cawaki explained the MSAF’s approach: vessels showing violations would be halted to investigate the incident before making necessary corrections. “We must understand why the breach occurred and take steps to address it before the vessel resumes operations,” he remarked.
Acknowledging the high costs associated with maintaining ships, he urged operators to conduct regular and timely maintenance to prevent significant problems from arising. Additionally, Cawaki encouraged passengers to report issues such as uncomfortable seating or cleanliness concerns frequently noted on social media.
MSAF is dedicated to ensuring vessel hygiene and enforcing compliance with safety standards to foster a healthy and pleasant environment for all passengers. Cawaki also reminded operators of the importance of adhering to shipping schedules to ensure reliable pick-ups and drop-offs.
This initiative highlights the commitment to enhancing ferry safety and service quality in Fiji, ensuring that passengers can travel with confidence during the festive season.
The proactive measures being taken by the MSAF not only aim to protect travelers but also encourage open communication, allowing the public to play an essential role in maintaining safety standards.
