Passengers traveling by ferry in Fiji are being encouraged to report any safety defects they encounter onboard. This initiative, led by Joeli Cawaki, the chief executive officer of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), aims to address ongoing concerns about the maintenance of shipping vessels.
Cawaki emphasized the crucial role that quick reporting plays in maintaining safety, particularly given the increased travel during the busy holiday season. He insisted that passengers expect a standard of service for the fares they pay and that their safety remains the top priority.
Certain vessels known for having defects will be monitored more closely during this period. Cawaki stated that each ferry is required to follow a robust ship management system, and all crew members must prioritize passenger safety at all times.
In addressing potential breaches of passenger capacity limits, Cawaki explained that MSAF would temporarily halt the vessel to investigate the reason for the breach, ensuring that corrective actions are taken before the vessel is allowed to set sail again.
He recognized the high costs associated with ship maintenance and urged operators to perform timely upkeep to prevent serious malfunctions. In addition, he encouraged passengers to voice concerns regarding poor seating or unhygienic conditions, which have been common topics on social media.
MSAF is dedicated to ensuring vessel hygiene and enforcing safety standards, creating a comfortable and healthy travel environment for all passengers. Cawaki also reminded operators of the importance of sticking to shipping schedules for efficient pick-ups and drop-offs.
Overall, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to enhancing ferry safety and service quality, ultimately aiming to ensure that passengers can travel with confidence during the festive season.
