Ferry Chaos: Time for Change on Fiji’s Interisland Routes?

The interisland ferry services operated by Sea Road, Interlink, and Goundar Shipping play a crucial role in connecting the islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu through Nabouwalu, Natovi, and Ellington ports. These ferry services are becoming essential transportation options for residents and visitors, with schedules running around the clock. However, this rapid operation invites certain risks and challenges that need to be addressed to ensure passenger safety.

A recent travel experience highlighted several issues regarding the punctuality and operational efficiency of the ferry services. Passengers are often required to report several hours before their scheduled departures, with buses frequently arriving late, adding unnecessary stress to the travel experience. Furthermore, there are complaints about the inconsistency of boat arrivals, where passengers, particularly the elderly and those needing assistance, face additional challenges when boats do not arrive on time.

An alarming concern arises when boats are preparing to berth at ports. Often, they encounter previously anchored vessels that do not move aside, despite repeated horn signals. This situation can lead to dangerous scenarios where incoming boats risk hitting anchors or reefs, or even running aground. Extended periods of waiting at sea not only prolong travel times but also delay reunions with family members eagerly awaiting their arrival.

In light of these challenges, it is imperative for Marine Masters, the Marine Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), and relevant government authorities to adopt proactive measures. Improved monitoring and adherence to schedules are essential. By prioritizing punctuality and safety, the ferry services can enhance the travel experience for all passengers, ensuring a smoother link between the islands.

By addressing these operational challenges, the ferry services have the potential to evolve into a well-coordinated transportation system, benefiting passengers and reducing anxieties during travel. Moreover, such improvements could encourage increased use of this vital service, helping to foster stronger connections between the islands.
