Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a temporary suspension of Ferris wheel operations until further notice. This decision comes in light of an incident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni. The National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS) is currently investigating the situation to ascertain the cause of the malfunction that forced patrons to be assisted by operators and bystanders during disembarkation.

In discussions with the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for thorough examination and safety precautions. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident. The Ministry is committed to investigating the circumstances surrounding the malfunction based on the evidence collected.

Until the investigation is concluded, the NOHSS has issued a prohibition notice that halts operations of all Ferris wheel rides. A detailed report will be compiled following the investigation, with updates to be shared by the Ministry.

In response to the incident, Opposition MP Virendra Lal has advocated for stricter regulations governing Ferris wheel operators, citing the need for enhanced safety measures given that this is not an isolated event in recent years. Lal’s call for tougher legislation aims to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of patrons.

This proactive approach towards safety and legislation is a positive step that highlights the importance of ensuring public safety at events. The ongoing investigation and potential legislative changes could lead to more stringent standards in amusement ride operations, fostering a safer environment for both operators and visitors.

In summary, the government’s swift action reflects a commitment to public safety, and with appropriate measures being discussed, the hope is that such incidents will be mitigated in the future.
